Seven police have been treated in hospital after putting their lives on the line to rescue a woman from a burning house.

Police attended a residence in Susan St, Newtown shortly after 11.00pm. On arrival they found a terrace style home totally involved in flames.

Frantic efforts were made to gain access to the woman inside. Police smashed down the front door and a Sergeant located a nearby ladder and forced entry to the upper floor. Fighting back the flames and thick smoke the officers managed to locate the woman and drag her to safety.

Although overcome by heat and smoke, the police continued their efforts and helped evacuate six other residents from immediate danger.

A number of officers were treated on scene and some were rushed to hospital for specialised treatment.

Fire brigade units were soon on scene and prevented the fire from spreading to nearby units.

Two probationary Constables, two Constables, two Sergeants and an Inspector were all treated and assessed by RPA hospital. All Police were released later that morning and given the all clear.

The resident is reported to be in a serious condition.

It's highly likely all officers will be recommended for bravery medals for their courageous actions.

My balacony is right opposite this apartment and I witnessed the bravery of these policemen. They did everything they could to help those residents especially the lady in the burning house. I just stood there in total amazement at their determination to do the right thing. I wondered whether I would be so brave under those dreadfull conditions. Yes GOD BLESS THOSE MEN AND WOMAN WHO RISKED THEIR LIVES. You are an inspiration to people like me. You make me want to do so much more in my life. Thank-you again, and thank-you to everyone on the scene, paramedics, firemen/woman and police. Thank-you!!!
