At 3.30pm a major gas main was ruptured next to the famous Bondi Hotel on Campbell Parade in Bondi.

Over 100 people were evacuated from nearby premises due to a serious threat of an explosion.

The NSW Fire Brigade from Bondi and Randwick attended·the scene to protect nearby properties and gas technicians during the delicate and dangerous operation.

Many evacuated residents, workers and tourists all watched in anticipation waiting for a large fireball to erupt. However, this explosion was prevented due to the outstanding work of the fire crews.

Bondi Station Officer, Michael Yearsley commented that this was a very large main, and gas could be clearly seen and heard venting into the sky.

The operation finished almost 2 hours later with the main being sealed at street level.

Police closed one lane of Campbell Parade and established clear safety zones for the public.
