At 10.15am a home under demolition in Chamberlain Ave Rose Bay was evacuated after a workman found a Grenade in the basement of the house.

Emergency services were called to the scene and closed the road due to safety concerns. A number of residents were evacuated, with some requested not to leave their homes.

Specialist units from the NSW Police Bomb Disposal Squad and Bomb Detection K9 unit were utilised, however further specialist assistance was required from the Militaries Ammunition & Technical Weapons Division.

The Grenade was closely examined and determined to be inert. The fuse was not located and the device could not be detonated by normal means. The device was taken by the Military and later destroyed.

The Grenade is believed to date back to World War II and may have belonged to the previous owner of the property.

Police from Rose Bay were not able to confirm if the past resident was still alive or whether any charges could be laid for possessing the device.
