An elderly woman was transported to hospital after a freak accident in Bondi this evening.

At 8.30pm it’s believed a Subaru station wagon was being driven when the accelerator jammed. The vehicle reversed across the street into a parked car and then accelerated at full speed back across the street into a block of units.

The female was trapped for a short time and was assisted by local residents until emergency services arrived.

The Fire Brigade examined the structural integrity of the building and declared there was no risk of collapse. Reno Sotto, a long term resident of the units said “I heard screeching, and there was a loud explosion”. He owned the damaged garage and appeared shaken by the incident.

Accidents are nothing new to this area. Locals know Ocean Street as being dangerous. It’s used every day as a conduit for cars heading to the CBD.

Another resident, Felipe said “Luckily there were no other vehicles driving down Ocean Street at that time, as the accident could have been much worse. Considering the speed at which some drivers travel down Ocean Street it was amazing that no one else got hurt".

He added, “This is a serious issue that has been overlooked by Waverley Council. Speed humps like those installed on Hall Street could be installed to slow the
traffic down".

Council recently reversed the directions of a nearby one way road. Residents are complaining that many drivers are performing dangerous U turns in order to beat the traffic rush to the city.
