Residents of Woniora Rd in South Hurstville arrived home to discover a torrent of water rushing down their suburban street.

The NSW Fire Brigade, Police and Local emergency management closed the road as there was a fear of a road collapse.

A number of Sydney water service vehicles attended the scene and began to close the nearby valves to stop the flood.

Residents watched on, fearful that the water level could rise and invade their homes, however most of the gathering crowd were from nearby premises enjoying and laughing at the spectacle.

During the restoration work the road finally collapsed, leaving a crater around 1 metre deep.

In a bizarre turn of events,· a neighbour witnessed a Sydney Water truck being raided by a person who stopped to steal the keys. No other items were believed to be taken.

Police returned to the scene to take statements from Sydney Water and the witness. They and are now in the process of finding the alleged offender.
