Emergency services have been inundated with calls for assistance as a strong southerly moved across Sydney overnight.

The severe winds approached at around 1.30am and are expected to continue throughout today.

The NSW Fire Brigade has responded to hundreds of calls for assistance with power lines down, motor vehicle accidents, trees across roads as well as threats of a scaffolding collapse at a building site in the CBD.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a Gale warning for most parts of the NSW coast with wind speeds·recorded in excess of 70km/h with gusts up to 90km/h.

The warning remains current, with the next update scheduled for 11am.

NSW Fire Brigade Bondi Station Commander Bill Morris said “It’s been a very busy night for the fire brigade”. Their station was extremely busy with the clean up operations in their local·area.

Damage was widespread over the coastal and inner suburbs of Sydney, with mostly power lines breaking, caused by snapped tree limbs.·A number of cars were also damaged by large fallen trees.

I'd like to know whether the SES people get any compensation for going out under these conditions. If not, what could possibly motivate them?

The umbrella video at the end was funny. Glad I had my head hiding under the pillow when all of this was going on. It looked cold and miserable.
