Emergency services responded to reports of a kitchen fire on Durdans Ave in Rosebery at 5.30pm.

A child from a neighbouring property smelled smoke and alerted her mother. Frantic efforts were made by the neighbours to gain access to the property but were held back by the thick smoke.

Fire crews attended shortly after the 000 call was made and forced entry into the premises. A thermal imaging camera detected the body of an elderly male in a kitchen pantry.

He was rescued by fire crews and found in a critical condition. CPR was performed until Ambulance crews arrived. The gentleman was transported to RPA Hospital with 60% burns to his body, however he later died in hospital.

Fire investigation crews along with Police Detectives have been called to assist with enquiries. The blaze is not considered suspicious.

NSW Fire Brigade Station Officer Brad Tarlington states that it’s a timely reminder to ensure all homes have working smoke detectors and if a fire is discovered, to evacuate and let the Fire Services fight the blaze.

It is lovely to see the neighbours in Rosebery coming together to help this man. The quick actions of the little girl and her mother are to be commended. My thoughts are with them and the family of the man.
