NSW Fire Brigades responded to a 6th alarm structure fire at the G2 Building at the University of NSW on Anzac Parade in Kensington.

Around 80 fire-fighters battled the blaze with multiple hand lines and three aerial-platform appliances.

Thick black smoke could be seen across Sydney. Police shut down the arterial road in both directions causing major logistical and traffic control nightmares for the public and government controlled transportation.

Asbestos has been discovered in the building and fire services are monitoring the quality of the air and the direction of the smoke plume.

Quick thinking by fire commanders and crews on scene avoided the risk of a major explosion as they found a number of gas and acetylene cylinders.

Ambulance services are on scene and on standby in a supporting role. There were no injuries.

Hundreds were evacuated from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) building as well as around 25 residents from neighbouring properties.

60% of the building has been destroyed.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

John Cawte, Billy Reid, Janaka and West Wollongong TAFE tried hard but a thick headed Gubba like me would still be the "sorriest person" my old man ever met. ?Over 500 tribes and ?350 tongues - maybe a bull roarer...X

Actually the building housed the Injury and Risk Management Research Centre, the Social Policy Research Centre and the Indigenous Policy and Dialogue Research Unit (where I work). Only one person was working in the building at the time of the fire and she is unharmed. We have lost combined decades and decades of research material that will be irreplaceable.

FYI: It's the Injury Risk Management Research Centre, if you check the map; there's a big UNSW Regiment sign right there, but that's for the place next door. Clearly the building was paying attention. Sunday fire = minimal risk of injury.
