It took around 8 years to discover the remains of what is believed to be the resident of a property in Kippax St, Surry Hills.

The elderly woman, who would now be 86 years old, had not been heard from since 2003. It took a phone call to authorities from her sister-in-law to check on her welfare.

The body was found on the top floor with only skeletal remains left. It is unknown the precise date, let alone year that she had passed away.
The remains are yet to be formally identified, however the death is not believed to be suspicious.

Police forced entry into the old terrace at around midday yesterday. Cobwebs could be seen from the street surrounding the decaying curtains. Paint was slowly peeling away from the front door and brickwork.

In a police statement, Acting Superintendent Zoran Dzevlan of Surry Hills Local Area Command said. “It’s sad that the woman appears to have died several years ago without anyone noticing,”
“This serves as a reminder for people to keep a neighbourly eye on those who live in their area, especially the elderly.”

Electricity was cut off to the residence some years ago, however, no government authorities were able to detect that the resident may have passed away.

Neighbours believed that the property was vacant.

Investigations are continuing into the matter and a report will be made to the coroner.

Home alone and dead

What a sad society we live in when the elderly can die in their own home and not be discovered until eight years later. Who do we blame - all of us. It beggars the question as to why our utility companies, having access to the age of its customers, could not flag those customers and report unpaid bills to the authorities. Better a forced entry by the law to find an empty home, than a corpse 8 years later. Come on Australia, we're better than that.
