![]() READ MORE TO VIEW GALLERY & VIDEO At around 3.25am a taxi collided with a power pole in Enmore Road, Newtown. Emergency services responded to the accident and were confronted with a dangerous situation. Power lines were left dangling on and above the car with a high risk of collapse. The driver of the car was trapped inside for over an hour and emergency services could not access him due to the live power running through the vehicle. Energy Australia technicians were called to shut down the local power grid and safely removed the live lines. Once the vehicle was no longer “live” Police Rescue, Ambulance and Fire crews could finally access and assess the trapped patient. It took a further 30 minutes to stabilize and extract the driver. The patient was safely removed and is believed to be in a stable condition. The road will remain closed until the electrical authority replaces the power pole. Power and other services are expected to be disrupted for a number of hours whilst repairs are undertaken. Police Inspector, Tony Heyward commended bystanders for wanting to assist the driver, however, he explained that when live power lines have fallen, members of the public must always wait for the emergency services as to avoid becoming a casualty. The cause of the accident is unknown.

And well done to the power guys getting the power back on so quickly. We were not expecting such a concentrated effort.

I actually know this person and visited him in hospital this week. He fell asleep at the wheel (which explains why Alex said there was no braking). Internal injuries, but no brain damage...massive doses of painkillers but still able to recognise people....Lucky to be alive!!

Also I'd like to add we called 000 and police and fire were there literally within minutes, it was an amazingly fast response.
scary stuff

I was walking home with two friends and was passing the parked car as the taxi smashed through the pole.
The lines collapsed around us and shards of the pole were skidding towards us as we ran from it. The taxi wasn't going any faster than 70km but didn't brake as it drove through the pole and into the car. None of us left with even a scratch but if that car hadn't been parked there we may no longer be here!
go aussies!!!!!!!

No doubt they all worked hard to assist the driver, however I question at what speed did the driver hit that pole to cause that much damage?
