Police are investigating the cause of a fire that left a train thick with smoke.

At around 1.45am, State Rail Fire, NSW Fire Brigade, Police and a fleet of Ambulances were called to Central Station Railway.

It’s reported that a seat had caught fire in one of the carriages, causing toxic smoke to travel throughout the train. The train had terminated at Central Railway.

Security guards from Rail Corp boarded the train and extinguished the fire.

There were no passengers on the train at the time of the fire.

12 Rail Corp staff were assessed and treated by ambulance crews. All are said to be in a satisfactory condition, however most were transported to hospital for mandatory assessment.

Police from City Central Local Area Command are investigating the matter.

Anyone with information is urged to contact City Central Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
