Police have launched a critical incident investigation after a pursuit in Kogarah early this morning.

At around 2.30am it’s alleged that police had chased a motorcycle rider which ended in a major head on accident.

The rider suffered critical injuries and had his helmet thrown some 50 metres from the wreck.  He was transported to St George Hospital with critical injuries but was later pronounced deceased by ER staff.

Police shut down all traffic on Rocky Point Road and established a very wide crime scene area.

A number of officers appeared shaken by the incident.

Witnesses said that up to 8 police cars were involved in the pursuit, however, these details are yet to be confirmed by Police.

Any witnesses to the accident or pursuit are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1-800-333-000.

How dare you straight-away assume he is a "criminal", "adrenalin junkie" and so forth. FYI; he wasn't a criminal or an adrenaline junkie. He was not "known" to the police nor was the bike stolen. He has paid for his mistake & stupid choice not to stop with his life. Who the hell do you think you are to spit venom and tarnish his name without even knowing him? I don't condone speeding at all or his choice; but the ending result is he has lost his life and his mother now has to bury her son and have Christmas without her ONLY son. He was the world to her. Have some sympathy for her. Yes, I take into account that there are "hoons" that use suburbia roads as their own personal raceway and that there have been fatalities of innocent people; but he was not one of those hoons. Have some damn respect for his family and friends who are grieving and leave your poisonous opinions to yourselves!! He was actually very smart and for a reason only known to him; made a stupid choice in the moment.

Good riddance to your rubbish comments. Don't comment on what type of person you assume him to be if you never even knew him. One wrong action doesn't define who he was.

I am sorry about your friend
written by nic, at 2:39:11 pm EST on 12 December 2011
I am deeply sorry about your friend, overall he was a very capable young man who made a terrible single error, miscalculation. I did not mean to offend.

It was a terrible, shocking accident & should stay with us for a long time because we are all shocked by this event in a city street. We should not do not need to see anything like this in a sydney street, it is like a war zone from this photo.

There are massive risks even being a law following rider and also massive risks if you want to be a good policeman and keep the streets safe. We do not need to allocate blame, it was a traffic accident with a motobike at high speeds that ended the life of a young man with so much promise & a terrible waste.

Again I am sorry for your loss.

I'm not saying what he did wasn't stupid or wrong... and I wish he didn't do what he did but I believe the police should take some responsibility for the matter. If he wasn't willing to pull over then they should have stopped the chase... any accident at that speed on a motorbike would have been fatal. To have 8 police cars chasing him was unfair and extremely dangerous. Their lack of foresight is disappointing. From what I heard from a witness, it seemed the police was trying to knock him off the road.

He wasn't wearing any protective gear, and his bike was not stolen. In reply to "nic" his friends did not push him to do this. They were supposed to meet him at home but he didn't turn up. They didn't even know, they got a call from the police after the accident and turned up only to witness a dear and beloved friend die. So to all the negative comments on this page, at least be respectful of the dead, if it were your friend I would do at least that much.
RIP HAMISH, we all love you
bad call by the rider - police did their job.
written by nic, at 10:29:33 am EST on 12 December 2011
bad call by the rider, he did not understand that riding can kill you. On an addrenalin rush he thought he could ourrun the police in a normal city street.. a fatal mistake, i feel sorry for his parents and his friend who pushed him to do this stupid stupid thing. The police did their job, protect the rest of us from a 200 kilogram "projectile" moving in a 60 km street over 150 km per hour.

I am a rider too but do not HAVE A DEATH WISH !!

No shirt,no jacket, no boots no protective gear.. he had no sense, he should have been on the racing track with all the protective gear to gain skill, not in a city street to kill or motorists or pedestrians.

speed kills people ..
sad he is dead. but honestly what are poliece supposed to do?`
written by ryan, at 12:04:35 pm EST on 11 December 2011
ok, so you think they shouldnt chase them. that sounds like a free hall pass do do whatever you want, as long as you get to 150km/hr for a few seconds then just drive home normally. have you seen how many imports have been stolen this WEEK in brisbane alone? keep chasing them.
RIP :-(

May the young man RIP and His Memory Be Eternal. Amen.

What a tragedy and right before our Sweetest Lord's Nativity.

I've read some of people's disturbing comments... how can any one express hostile words like "no remorse" despite of the stupidity of the deceased his life is lost. Its neither the POLICE'S FAULT in this tragic episode. This is a CLEAR REMINDER to all "road users"- the ROAD is there to be "RESPECTED and SHARED".

My prayers and with the family, relations and friends of the deceased.
Police need to take responsibility.
written by Sam, at 8:20:55 pm EST on 10 December 2011
Police should take responsibility!!
I agree with previous 2 comments. As soon as chase is initiated it will always more than likely result in a crash and in this instance fatal. Get him
While his alive not dead, let it go!! Rider would of eventually got sooner or later regardless.
Pull chase for suspected robbers/drug dealers/wrapists.
This incident will now result in a further excuse for the courts to create bigger fines and longer disq periods.
So over highway patrol cockroaches!!
Should have stopped

Idiot .....no remorse....
His own fault.............no remorse............

I am a sports bike rider myself, i own a 1000cc road bike, and yes i have run from the cops a few times.....but not in suburbia.......what if some one was crossing the road when this rider was going rediculous speeds ? What if it was your girlfriend or wife or any other family member ???? I would have killed him myself.....surely he knew the consequences of what he was doing.....a fine is better than death.....he should have stopped and faced the cops.....
CRIMINALS COMMENTING ON THIS POST!!!
written by Dom H., at 6:02:55 pm EST on 10 December 2011
It would be fair to say that all of you people tying to blame the Police for this death are probably all law breakers too. The bike was an R1 and chances are the filthy criminal riding probably didnt have the correct licence. Who cares, sucked in to the waste of space, good riddance scum.

The bike was lent by a friend, it was not stolen nor reported so, I blame the cops for their actions, they could have just tracked down the address of the owner of the bike, instead they chased a rider which was only wearing a shirt, shorts and no protective gear besides from a helmet. 21 years old and died before he should have, my heart goes out to his mum

Why are Police calling for witnesses when 8 cars were in pursuit?
There was little to gain in persuit

I am also shaking my head at the lack of foresight demonstrated by the police in this matter. This is not to say that the motorcylist was right in doing what he did, but to recklessly chase him down when it is clear the man would not relent at any cost was extremely stupid. I am not sure how the police expected this to end. What were they going to do, ram him off the road?? He still has to willing stop.

Pure stupidity by overzealous uncompromising police, and further demonstrations of lack of empathy and precisely the type of personlities that forge hostility in this world from the comments I see here wishing the motorcyclist good riddance. Shame on you all.
Good Work

I can't believe some of you people. You can't blame the cops at all. If this idiot obeyed the law he would still be alive.
Don't run and you won't die!
written by Dave, at 12:57:09 pm EST on 10 December 2011
If this fella had pulled over he wouldn't be dead now. His choice to run. Are we supposed to let everyone break the law if they do a runner?
don't break the law
written by john, at 12:51:17 pm EST on 10 December 2011
These bleeding hearts make me sick . Do not break the law and the police will not chase you . Do you expect the police to turn a blind eye to law-breakers ? A speeding motorcyclist is a danger to himself/herself and a danger to other road -users .Stop when asked . What about the danger to those police- officers who have to speed to stop these law -breakers ?

mmm getting the rego number and type it in to the data base. OH gosh the motorcycle was stolen. To be the reason for the chase. What did the motorcyclist not want the police to find out. Or was it the motorcyclist that was the adrenaline junky. Till the investigation is finished one really can't point fingers.

My thought's go to the police and the victims in the other car. I bet that this fool had previous convictions for simmilar offences. Unfortunate the way it ended for him but next time he may have killed a road user. To the police involved in the chase,it was not your fault!

Another death caused by adrenaline fueled police on the chase
written by luke, at 10:20:59 am EST on 10 December 2011
Well it seems that every week there is another death on our roads caused by another adreniline fueled police chase
High speed persuit is every highway cops dream, they love the chase,Its the reason you become a highway cop.

WHAT ABOUT THE INNOCENT PEOPLE WHO ALSO USE THE ROADS, THIS CHASE COULD HAVE QUITE EASILY BEEN WORSE WE COULD HAVE HAD MULTIPLE FATALITYS.
Why risk the lives of other road users just because he wont stop, a police chase should only be initiated if there is percieved to be a greater risk to the community bu not chasing him
Police are adding to road carnage in mad persuits in built up areas
written by Phillipe O'Connell, at 10:16:48 am EST on 10 December 2011
What was the point chasing the cyclest after geting his number plate, this mad rule placed other people on the road in danger, they only have to tap in his registration and go to that address, I don't understand how this officers can get a good nights sleep, after causing this accident, they are there to prevent this sort of occurence, persuits in built up areas have to be band because it not only endangers their lives, but also the lives of inicent people
