A man is very lucky to be alive after nearly drowning in an apparent accident at 9pm this evening.

Details of how the man fell into the water are still unclear, however the quick actions and response time of the NSW Water Police have undoubtedly saved the life of the male.

Water police explained that they saw the man waving for help whilst clinging to a port marker. He disappeared underwater prior to their arrival.

One of the officers immediately dived in and searched the dark waters. He managed to find the males body and was pulled from the water unconscious.

Ambulance Paramedics supported by a second intensive care vehicle responded to the call from Police and continued their treatment at the docks of Cockle Bay Wharf.

Darling Harbour rangers supported the emergency services and kept the large crowd under control whilst treatment was being performed.

The male has been taken to RPA hospital in serious but stable condition.

Police are investigating the cause of the incident.
