Police are investigating the death of a male after an altercation with a number of persons at Darling Harbour overnight.

At around 12:45am a fight erupted between a group of men inside licenced premises.

The brawl continued onto the footpath of Darling Harbour where one of the males ended up in the water.

Two female officers who were present at the time of the brawl attempted to break up the fight, but they were assaulted attempting to do so.

Police noticed the male having great difficulties staying above water. One of the female officers dived in, in a frantic attempt to save his life.

A few members of the public also assisted the police by diving in to help save the man. A life buoy was thrown in to assist all who were in the water.

Despite the brave efforts of the police and public, the man disappeared and drowned in the depths of the harbour.

Police Divers arrived at the location and located the male's body at about 3.15am.
