Residents across Sydney, along with parts of greater NSW were hit with heavy rain late last evening.

The storm system moved slowly across the metropolitan area, at times back building and dumping vast amounts of rain in the same area.

Parts of South West Sydney were hit the hardest with around 75mm in the Peakhurst area, and up to 61mm in Rose Bay.

Not to be spared was the Northern Beaches, reaching 61mm in Mona Vale.

Much of this rain fell within the space of an hour causing significant flash flooding.

Many road users were unsuspecting of the high water levels and had stalled their engines during the flash flood.

The SES responded to around 300 phone calls for assistance with a volunteer rescuing drivers floating in cars in Zetland.

NSW Fire Rescue & NSW Police crews were inundated with calls for assistance, closing roads and rescuing people from cars that had been subjected to high waters.
