The National Weather Service forecast a high risk of severe storms today and the forecast was accurate.

A deadly tornado has claimed 10 lives as its path, starting near the Interstate 20 highway in Louisiana, tracked north east around 200 miles across the state of Mississippi.

The long track tornado touched down many times with reports of it being over a mile wide.

The strength of the tornado is yet to be officially rated, however Emergency Management crews expect an EF5 rating. This rating was given to the infamous Greensburg Tornado in 2007.

Storm Spotters, emergency management, local law enforcement and the National Weather Service carefully tracked the deadly storms progress.

However ground crews had great difficulty keeping up with it. The storm reached tracking speeds of over 60 MPH, with wind speeds estimated over 200 mph.

In Eagle Lake, Mississippi, Warren County Permit Inspector, Reed Birdsong explained that 47 houses had received damage and 10 houses were destroyed.

Some homes were removed from their foundations. In this town there were no fatalities and only two minor injuries. Locals said that they had a good warning and were prepared for the impact.

The gallery features two areas:

Eagle Lake, Mississippi. Parts of a waterside community is levelled by a half mile tornado.

Interstate 20, Eastern Louisiana. A semi trailer looses control after it is hit by the tornadic winds. Trees are cut down by the high winds.
